2. PC-Based Tools

• I made the switch from MicroSoft to open-source software. I'm delighted... I'm so happy I could lay an egg. Thanks to the developers' global community!
• The operating software of my laptop is Windows, and my next laptop PC will be on Linux, maybe (or maybe not).
• On my WinIntel laptop PC, Clam Win detects and removes viruses from my computer. Spybot Search & Destroy deals with spyware, but I don't need it since I use FireFox.
• Utility software (compress/decompress): IZArc.
• I installed the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
• I write simple texts with Programmer's NotePad.
• I view and alter my pictures thanks to IrFanView.
• I watch my videos and listen to my music thanks to VLC —others prefer WinAMP or Real.
• I record sounds with Audacity.
• I deal with images thanks to GIMP (the GNU Image Manipulation Program) —see first the GIMP sub-site at Source Forge and, additionally, the GIMP site.
• My application suite is OpenOffice —a great open-source software.
• I read papers with the Adobe PDF reader.
• My Web browser is Mozilla FireFox (with feed reader Sage and its CSS) and I take my e-mails thanks to Mozilla ThunderBird —Opera, Flock and Lynx are also great browsers.
• I write my Web pages with bug-free Kompozer (based on the ultra-buggy Nvu), an open source HTML editor.
• I use ListGarden to generate the RSS/XML file that constitutes the RSS feed of my website —which is all about prediction markets.
• The files that make up my website are uploaded to my Web server thanks to Core FTP —the alternative product is FileZilla.
• My Rubik's cube puzzles are solved thanks to Cube Explorer. Some would say that using an algorithm to solve puzzles is cheating, but the sad truth is that I can't do it the natural way!
